Nowadays everybody is a lot more conscious of their energy usage and want to cut down to not only reduce their carbon footprint, but also save money on their bills.
It can be difficult to work out what is beneficial for saving energy, so at Complheat we have assembled some of the simplest and most effective energy saving tips to help you save money on your bills and help the planet too!
Firstly, try to familiarise yourself with your heating controls. It is easy to just set your thermostat at a certain temperature and leave it, but small adjustments can make a difference to your heating bills. For example, you can save £60 per year by dropping your thermostat by just one degree – a thermal difference you probably won’t even notice.
If you don’t want to make changes to your thermostat as you’re not familiar with it, a qualified heating engineer will be happy to come along and give you a tutorial.
Keeping your heating on constantly on a low heat rather than switching it on and off in hot bursts is proven to be more effective in heating your rooms but also saving you money.
Next, keep your water heating to a minimum.
The best ways to do this are to shower for as little time as possible, so maybe 10 minutes maximum. Installing a water-saving shower head can also decrease your hot water usage, these cost around £20 to purchase but can save you around £100 annually.
Other handy ways to limit your hot water use is to insulate your boiler with a boiler jacket and to wash your clothes at a medium temperature in your washing machine.
Additionally, fill your washing machine with a full load as you will get more for your money, and always air dry your laundry when possible rather than using a tumble dryer.
Next onto the lighting you use. Switching to LED lighting over halogen bulbs can initially be more expensive to buy, but they last a lot longer than traditional bulbs as they have no filament (the part which breaks in halogen bulbs). Therefore, they’re a cheaper to run in the long term.
According to research, in halogen bulbs, 90% of the electricity used is given off as heat, and only 10% as light. With LEDs this figure is reversed making them much more efficient.
It goes without saying that double glazing is a great way to insulate. But have you considered magnetic secondary glazing? It is inexpensive and easy to fit, and can be installed and removed whenever you like
It works by sticking magnetic strips to your window and then attaching panels to it. Only 15% of the price of double glazing and will slow heat transfer through your windows.
Old boilers can run at as little as 60% efficiency which means you lose as much as 40p in every pound that you spend on energy bills. Modern condensing boilers are typically 91-92% efficient, giving you plenty more energy for less money.
Complheat Heating & Plumbing are equipped to provide an expert boiler repairs service and can recommend more efficient new boilers at competitive prices that can actually save you money long-term.
